The Challenge
University event coordinators use the Marching Order software to coordinate every detail of the big day. The existing software was robust, but buried information and lacked a central hub for important tasks.
Our Solution
With the addition of an intuitive dashboard, we made it easy for users to track their progress in the planning process. We based the navigation on a simplified timeline, showing users what phase they’re in related to their event date as well as what milestones need to be completed to move forward.
The first step in UX design improvements was to audit the existing product and get to know the users. We created detailed user personas and identified their primary pain points. We then worked towards solutions by designing low-fidelity user flows and wireframes.
Next, we designed the dashboard and reporting screens on a dark background to distinguish it from other key software features. This approach created proper importance and hierarchy.
Finally, we developed an expanded color palette for the brand. We introduced jewel tone accents (jade green, orange-gold, and amethyst) to bring joy and visual interest to the reporting section. These colors also help indicate the importance and immediacy of tasks on the dashboard (green=good to go, orange=needs attention, etc.).
